Seabird mortality in longline fishing can be prevented by releasing hooks deep underwater, out of the sight of birds.
Typically, longline fishermen set branch lines by hand onto the water where they are highly visible and easily attacked by seabirds. This is not helpful for fishermen and endangers seabirds.
So far, there has been no simple solution. While fishing regulations require the use of seabird deterrent measures to avoid hooking (such as trailing bird scaring streamers, setting at night and restricting fishing to certain places or seasons) no measure is effective on its own, and all of them make fishing more difficult.
The BS30 Underwater Bait Setter offers a solution – it prevents seabirds being caught by releasing baited hooks underwater out of the sight of birds. It does not interfer with fishing or require the use of any additional seabird deterrent measures.
